Citrox – A success story for alternative natural chemicals
10/07/2008
It is small, brown and hard, almost wooden-like and unappetising; but this young orange, an insignificant-looking ball of pith at this stage in the fruit's life, with no oils, no flesh and no pips , is the basis of a science that is revolutionising not one, but a collection of industries.
Some might go as far as to say that Citrox, a wholly natural biocide intermediate, which has been developed from soluble bioflavonoids taken from the immature fruit, will eventually make the biggest positive impact on the health of the world's population since the invention of penicillin.
A bold statement perhaps, but Citrox has already found applications in farming, animal health, crop propagation, food decontamination, water treatment and, more recently, in human medical and personal care applications.
To give a few examples, it is replacing chlorine as a means to naturally decontaminate fresh produce such as, fruit and vegetables sold in packaged form in supermarkets.
In the farming industry, it is part of a compound being used to reinforce plant and crop resistance to disease attack - a unique and natural alternative to synthetically manufactured pesticides, fungicides and insecticides.
It is similarly being used during the export of produce, for example prolonging the shelf life of fruits and vegetables during shipment.
It is the basis of a range of organically based cleaners and sanitizers used increasingly in food factory cleaning and hygiene. It is also the vital ingredient in household cleaning products being produced in partnership with a leading European manufacture to replace the conventional chlorine-based baby bottle steriliser products.
Moreover, it is the basis of a range of personal care products that are now available in shops in the UK including Tesco Pharmacies, that are marketing Citrox Biosciences branded toothpaste that not only kills bacteria and viruses, but also stimulates gum cell growth, as well as oral spray, mouthwash and a hand-cleanser gel (the true potential of which is only just beginning to emerge).
The fact that Citrox is non-toxic to human offers infinite possibilities of decontamination without the need to worry about human exposure.
Mr. Ripley, founder and Managing Director of Citrox Limited began the research and development of Citrox  in the early -1990s, but the origins of the science go back to 1936, when Nobel Prize - winner Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi published his investigations into the effectiveness of naturally-occurring plant extracts in human and plant health applications. Ironically, it was another major breakthrough, the advent of antibiotics, that diverted attention from his discoveries and the technology has effectively been ignored for 60 years.
